The United Methodist Alliance for Transgender Inclusion issues the following alert out of pastoral care and crying for justice.
The State of Kansas has enacted one of the most sweeping rollbacks of transgender rights in the nation, placing thousands of God’s trans children in immediate harm.
Kansas legislatures have immediately invalidated existing driver’s licenses and birth certificates held by transgender residents. These documents are now being forcibly replaced with versions that erase the person’s true gender identity.
Transgender Kansans are receiving letters instructing them to surrender their IDs or face penalties. There is no grace period, no recognition of the dignity of the people whose daily lives depend on accurate identification. This action is not administrative. It is not neutral. It is a direct attempt to eliminate transgender people from civic and legal life.
As United Methodists committed to justice, compassion, and the inherent worth of every child of God, we must speak plainly:
This is state-enforced erasure.
This is a violation of United Methodist Social Principles.
This is a moral crisis.
We call upon clergy, congregations, and allies across the connection to raise your voices, open your doors, and stand with transgender Kansans. Now is the moment for active, public solidarity rooted in the Gospel mandate to protect the marginalized and to love our neighbors without condition.
To trans siblings in Kansas and everywhere:
You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Your identity is real.
Your dignity is not up for a vote.
Your church family has not abandoned you.
This is a time to overcome injustice by confronting it with collective courage, prayerful action, and unwavering love.
UMATI will continue monitoring developments and providing guidance, pastoral resources, and action steps. If you need support, advocacy materials, or help organizing within your congregation, we stand ready to assist. Contact UMATI at umctransgender@gmail.com
We will not be silent.
We will not be complicit.
We will overcome, together.
