Nex Benedict Vigil

We are here tonight because the systems of our world did not support Nex Benedict.

The political system did not support Nex. A bathroom bill was passed, similar to the bathroom bill pending in the Ohio Statehouse, that put Nex in jeopardy.

The school system failed Nex. The medical system, the police failed to protect Nex.

We cannot depend on the systems of the world to protect us.

Many of us here tonight are often gathered here at the Ohio Statehouse to change these systems. But until a day when justice comes, we cannot depend on schools or politicians or police to protect us. We have to look out for each other.

Chosen family is a powerful thing. One of the most powerful forces I have ever experienced. I have received so much love and support and care and kindness from chosen family. No one can take that away from us. Chosen family can never be legislated away.

Tonight, as we conclude, I want you to turn to someone close to you and say, “I got you”. Hug someone if they are comfortable with that. Look at the person next to you and tell them “I got you.”

Let us be the ones who care for each other, look out for each other, support each other. I got you.
